Eligibility
General requirements

Age: 18yrs to 60yrs
-
Minimum weight: 45 kg.

Minimum Hemoglobin : 12.5 g / dl (tested before donation)

Blood pressure: Minimum - 110 / I70 mmHg, Maximum - 180 / 100 mmHg

Interval between donations: 3 months
-
Time of donation: Within 2 hrs of a meal
-
Well Being: Must feel healthy that particular day
(i.e. must not have a cold or cough or the flu or be on any form of medication.)
Some reasons for temporary deferral
-
Alcohol consumption during the past 12 hours
-
Ingestion of Aspirin and certain other drugs during the previous 3 days
-
Vaccination: Normally 1 month (depends on the type of vaccine)

Malaria: 6 months
-
Minor surgery: 3 months
-
Major surgery: 6 months
-
Typhoid fever: 12 months
-
Jaundice: 12 months
-
Tuberculosis: 2 years after successful treatment.

Blood transfusion , Needle injury. Tattooing, Acupuncture, Tonsure ear piercing: 12 months
-
Pregnancy: during and for 12 months after delivery.

Breast Feeding: during and for 6 months afterwards.
Some reasons for permanent disqualification

Documented positive test for Hepatitis B & C or HIV

Syphilis and Gonorrhoea

Malignancy (Cancer)
-
Drug abuse
-
Growth hormone injections
Interval since last donation

Minimum 90 days
Major Illness / Surgery
Persons with the following conditions are not eligible to donate blood
-
Diseases of the heart or lungs
-
Cancer
-
Epilepsy
-
Asthma
-
High blood pressure and on medication for that.

Abnormal bleeding tendency or blood disorder.

Major Surgery (Can donate after 12 months)
Medication
People who are taking drugs for cancer treatment, heart
diseases or current infections may also be not suitable as blood donor.
Temporary deferral may also be necessary for other medications.

Some prospective donors will be advised not to donate blood. This is to protect their health or that of the patient who may receive the blood.
