About Jeevan
-
A succession of avoidable tragedies - all transfusion related.
-
Difficulties in obtaining safe blood components in an emergency.
-
A smiling victim of an unsafe blood transfusion - a two-year old baby girl.
-
Reason enough to start Jeevan Blood Bank.
The idea began to evolve in 1992. The urgency intensified after a trustee visited another blood bank in the city to donate blood and was appalled at the poor safety levels and lack of donor care.
By January 1995, a group of committed individuals had agreed to start a blood bank and established Jeevan Blood Bank Research Centre, managed by a Public Charitable Trust. A board of trustees was appointed and the name "Jeevan" meaning "Life" was chosen for the blood bank. After nine months of hectic preparations, Jeevan was inaugurated on September 24th 1995.
Jeevan Blood Bank and Research Centre was started on 24th September 1995 with the vision of providing, on demand, safe blood and blood components collected from nonremunerated voluntary blood donors using appropriate and current technologies in accordance to international standards.
Jeevan is a not for profit community blood bank managed by a Board of Trustees. Over the past twelve years Jeevan has collected over 69,000 blood donations and made available over 120,000 units of safe blood and blood components to the community.
In the 12 years of our existence, our conviction in our vision has been reinforced by the transformation that we have been able to create in the way transfusion medicine is practiced in India. This has helped us to make a positive difference to the lives of many individuals.
We owe this success to the thousands of people who have come in the path of Jeevan as blood donors and financial donors, who have helped us, in pursuing our vision. Their generosity has helped us accomplish a lot and we look forward to the future with optimism and enthusiasm.
